Iron Lung Fan Animation
This short animation is inspired by the film 'Iron Lung'. It features a selection of hand-drawn illustrations of the main protagonist from the film, Simon, as well as a 3D modeled and textured environment made in Blender. The 2D images are incorporated into the 3D environment via multiple texture maps to adjust how each illustration is lit in the scene. The left-most drawing features an alternate version with harsh rim-lighting, which it transitions upon activation of the strong light source.
Despite the seamingly simple scene, there is actually many smaller animated features in this piece. The camera bobs up and down to simulate the submarine moving. The lights dont stay at a constant brightness, alluding to the age of the machinery. Perhapse the most noticable bit of animation is the pool of blood that the character is standing in. One might assume that this is done with a complex liquid simulation, but it is actually just a single plane with a displacement map and proper materials. This dramatically saves on render time while still producing realistic effects.
